Closure and its legacy today

The divisional nursing officer's view

Pam Hibbs was Divisional Nursing Officer at Hackney Hospital, and was involved in the closure of the Mothers' in 1986. Here she explains why she felt an isolated maternity hospital with a Christian ethos was an outdated concept.

The consultant's view

As a cardiologist at the Hackney Hospital, Dan Tunstall Pedoe visited the Mothers' Hospital regularly in response to medical emergencies. He was very critical of the maternity hospital, believing its facilities were inadequate, its standards of medical care were poor, and some of its staff were known to be incompetent. Dan gave evidence at the Knutsford Inquiry, set up in response to a number of maternal deaths at the Mothers'. Here he explains why he thought it was high time the hospital was closed down.
