St Leonard's in the Second World War

During the Second World War, St Leonard's experienced some bomb damage, as the map here shows. But just the former vagrant's ward and the hospital annex, both by then nurses' homes, in purple ink, were completely destroyed in the heavy raids of 1941. It was quite a considerable estate that thus passed to the fledgling NHS in 1948.
