The London Nobody Knows + shorts

The Hackney Society will be hosting a screening of this rarely seen yet highly acclaimed film from 1967, directed by Norman Cohen with JAMES MASON (cert: PG, r/t: 47 mins). The film offers an extraordinary insight into a London on the cusp of change and now all but vanished. Capturing glimpses into the margins of the changing city, from the meths drinkers in Spitalfields to abandoned music halls and a Camden resembling the paintings by Walter Sickert, the result is an enthralling and fascinating view that presents a dramatic counterpoint to our familiar view of the sixties.

Based on the book of the same name by Geoffrey Fletcher, published in 1962, the documentary sought to capture the eclectic and bizarre world he observed. His view of the buildings and people provide a glimpse into a bygone and lost era, as the wrecking balls loom over the city.

This screening is to help raise fund s for the Hackney Society, founded in 1967, the year the film was made. The Hackney Society works to preserve Hackney's unique heritage and make the area a better place in which to live and work.
