Stoke Newington Town Hall FULL

Stoke Newington Town Hall is a Grade II listed building, a restrained civic edifice of brick and Portland stone on the outside, but with an extravagant Art Deco interior. It was designed by J Reginald Truelove, and opened by the Lord Mayor of London in September 1937. It has now been exquisitely restored by Hawkins Brown, and reopened for public use in February 2010. The large Assembly Hall has a sprung Canadian maple wood dance floor—with what is reputed to be the largest mirror ball in Europe suspended above it— and the magnificent staircase, cloakrooms, hallways and foyers have all been restored to a very high standard. Perhaps the most sumptuous element is the Council chamber, with gold cornicing and plasterwork above dark walnut panelling, with a strong Egyptian flavour to the dark, glowing interior.
