Ancient Routes, Trading Routes

WALK on Saturday 19 February 2011, 2pm

Starting outside Hackney’s 1930s Town Hall this linear walk follows the old Market Porters’ Route, a traditional trading way for the transportation of produce and livestock from the fields of Essex and Hackney to the markets in the City. En route we visit London Fields an ancient open space used to graze sheep and cattle until the 19th century, London Field’s Lido, the large pebble sculpture of flower sellers and sheep by Free Form Arts (1988-9), lively Broadway Market and ends with a short walk along the towpath of the Regent’s Canal.

On the walk

You will need to wear comfortable clothing and suitable walking shoes. If it looks like rain bring a waterproof jacket. Also bring water, food and any medication you might need. Before the start of the walk you will need to fill out a Health Questionnaire. If you have any health concerns it is recommended that you check with your GP before joining. Pedometers will be provided.
