A Radical Ramble

Hackney is known for being confrontational, non-conformist and radical, a reputation brought to the area in the late seventeenth century by characters such as Daniel Defoe. But is Hackney still the heart of dissent, as it was when Mary Wollstonecraft and Richard Price broadcast their radical ideas from Newington Green? This walk takes in the dissenters of Stoke Newington and winds its way to Shoreditch via the anti-fascist protests in Clissold Park, riots in Ridley Road, communists in De Beauvoir and Christian reformers in Hoxton. It explores politics, gentrification, and the social history of Hackney, asking ‘is Hackney truly Red, or just another comfy middle-class suburb?’ Bring a picnic lunch.

On the walk

You will need to wear comfortable clothing and suitable walking shoes. If it looks like rain bring a waterproof jacket. Also bring water, food and any medication you might need. Before the start of the walk you will need to fill out a Health Questionnaire. If you have any health concerns it is recommended that you check with your GP before joining. Pedometers will be provided.
