Ghostsigns of Stoke Newington
WALK on Saturday 15 February 2014, 11am
SOLD OUT: Regrettably this event is already fully booked. We hope Sam will run this walk for members again, later in the year, but in the meantime you can book places on the Ghostsigns tours Sam runs for the public at http://www.ghostsigns.co.uk/tours
This walking tour through Stoke Newington's historic conservation area features some of London's best ghostsigns (fading advertisements painted on walls) as well as many other points of interest. These include a Banksy survivor, a lethal alleyway and a pint in the pub to finish it all off. The signs are used to explore local, advertising, craft and design history, aided by additional photographic resources shared en route.
After the tour you will start to spot ghostsigns everywhere you go with a heightened appreciation of their history and place in the contemporary urban streetscape. While photos are useful for documenting ghostsigns before they are lost, nothing compares to seeing them 'in the flesh'. This tour includes some of London's best examples, the stories behind them, and an introduction to the topic in more general terms.
About the Tour Leader
The tour is led by lifetime Stoke Newington resident, Sam Roberts, a leading figure in ghostsigns research and documentation. His writing and photography have appeared in numerous books, journals, magazines and newspapers, in addition to the renowned Ghostsigns blog. In 2010 he curated the History of Advertising Trust Ghostsigns Archive and his first book, Hand-Painted Signs of Kratie, explores the characteristic street advertising found in Cambodia. Sam regularly speaks on the topic of ghostsigns and advises other researchers in their own work.
FREE for Hackney Society members, £5 for non-members.
